Equine Dentistry

Dr. J.D. Norris of Equine Dentistry writes a monthly column in Cowboy Times magazine. Here is the May 2008  column:

     A series on RFD TV called the All-Around Performance Horse asked us back in January to film an equine dental program for their show.  This particular show aired about two or three weeks ago, and it is amazing to me how many people watch this channel across the country.  We have been overwhelmed with calls and questions from viewers all over the United States.

     Mindy and I want to thank all of you for sharing your time, horses, and invaluable feedback as we continue on this journey in equine dentistry.  As all of you know, equine dentistry has really been an unknown for many horse owners.  Only the last few years, with the advancement of drugs, equipment, x-rays, and other technologies, have we been able to become aware of the huge affect teeth and dentition have on the horse, especially the performance horse.

     We know there is a lot more to learn, and each horse we work with is a new experience.  We focus mainly on evaluating the “whole” horse, and trying to identify body mechanics and body functions that relate to dental problems.
